PlayStation wanted to move the yet-to-be-released Vue product out of the console and onto a broad array of platforms. I was brought in to help draw an architecture around an approach which would allow us to port the solution onto multiple platforms.
Design
The design direction was set by the PS4 product that was released at the beginning of the project. Our goal was to meet that design and adapt where needed. Of particular note was the FireTV remote design that was a large departure from the PS4 game controller.
My immediate choice was to build the architecture around HTML where possible as this would afford us the most portability.
Challenges
Using HTML presented performance challenges on the lower-end FireTV Stick as well as architecture challenges with being a hybrid app as the Video Player needed to be native.
Outcome
The final product was extremely well-received by customers and the industry. And the separation of the architectural elements set us up for great success as we moved across many other platforms.
