The quantified self is something I’ve always been interested in. iExercise is a good example of that. In 2001 I first wrote a web-based exercise tracking system. Over the years that morphed from platform to platform.
I was looking for something with very quick and simple readability. That meant fewer features and faster access to them. I went with a sticker-esque theme in an attempt to keep it from getting too serious. I also designed a system of goal and achievements with varying degrees of silliness that a user could earn.
As a data-collection app I wanted very simple entry and selection. This lead me to a large number of cached settings and values so that your 3-mile run was only two button presses away.
